Rethinking Waste

On Tuesday, November 12, Sustainability Walk The Talk (SWTT) visited saveBOARD’s Hamilton plant  where we saw how waste soft plastics and composite  packaging are transformed into viable and sustainable building products.

Charlotte Catmur - Sustainability and Climate Change Manager, Hamilton City Council said, “It really makes you rethink how our purchasing decisions can make a difference and about the significant role circularity has in sustainability and reducing emissions.”

saveBOARD is focused on building a circular economy by turning composite packaging waste, back into low carbon products that re-enter the local supply chain eliminating future waste.

It is eye opening to see how a range of everyday packaging waste can be upcycled into high performing building materials – that are durable, inherently moisture and mould resistant and affordable.

And it kept getting better as we learned how saveBOARD  products are 100% recyclable (by saveBOARD). Paula Wallace - National Specification Manager, saveBOARD said "we welcome back all recovered offcuts and end of life saveBOARD products so that they can be remanufactured into new boards providing a circular solution."

The exciting thing is that saveBOARD has the potential to  upcycle 4,000,000kg of packaging waste per year. And for every saveBOARD product purchased it saves 25kg of packaging waste from going to landfill.

If you have not discovered saveBOARD yet –take a look into it and give some thought about how to  do things differently to reduce waste and close the loop on product lifecycles.

Sustainability Walk The Talk (SWTT)is a series of action-focussed learning and networking tours for business and sustainability leaders, showcasing how local businesses are implementing sustainable practices. This event was organised and jointly sponsored by Hamilton City Council and CELF: Community & Enterprise Leadership Foundation, in partnership with event host, saveBOARD.

To all the senior leaders and business owners out there, let’s continue to walk the talk and make sustainability a priority in our businesses. Together, we can make a difference!
